Just a while back I was celebration the New Year, then I blinked and “Hey Presto” it’s the 1st Sept! What happened! I cannot stress enough the value of our precious time. It’s important we use it wisely, achieve something useful for the benefit of others and enjoy the journey. Through Dec 2018 and over Christmas I had a total revamp. Complete clear out of the house, of my Business and of my Soul. I took a serious look in a mirror. It nearly cracked but not quite, however, it was time for me to decide who I am and what I want.
I found it amazing to review how often people came to me with the best “gadget” I must have to succeed. Because of 20yrs Networking I’m constantly TOLD I need the new App that works wonders for us – thousands of new contacts with 100’s of leads. Sounds wonderful IF that’s what you want but people seldom start their sales pitch by asking me the simple question – “What do I want”.
And what exactly do I wish for in 2019?
Surprisingly for many, what I want is very different to what I’ve been known for. Just like politics at present though, I started with a long list of what I DON’T want. But it all helps to arrive at what I do want.
Firstly, I needed to change how I Network. In most businesses Networking, when properly done, is one of the best ways to gain new work. But most people have no clue on how to Professionally Network. They attend adhoc events without any research and so have no clue if the meeting is right for them or not. That’s a possible 4hrs of their time wasted and in monetary terms 4 times their hourly rate. A real waste of time and money because no preparing and planning was done.
Next, many people don’t really know who their ideal clients are. It’s unbelievable the time and money lost in joining Networking Groups because the Host is a great Salesperson. Becoming a member of that group has got little to do with how useful the meetings are to you!! For many, the hours and money wasted on weekly Networking is phenomenal. This is a very expensive way to run a business. Sadly, it can all be avoided if only people would research and plan what events will be best suited for their ideal client.
For many years, I’ve researched my events before going. I very often asked for a Guest List before going. Initially, I was working with a much wider audience. Then, over recent years I’ve slowly cut back on which to go to. Dec 2018 was the final decision to stop general Networking through 2019. Professional Networking is NOT about numbers. It’s not about the masses. I don’t want help in getting in front of thousands. Why on earth would I want the headache of dealing with those numbers!
For me it’s all about quality. I have decided to work with a brilliant group of Entrepreneurs within the Property industry. I know this market. I know what my Clients WANT and I know where exactly to find that. I introduce people to the people they want to do business with.
The easiest way to make those connections is, of course, through Networking, Professional Networking. I set up small private groups to bring together the right people to build relationships. From that trust grows and business opportunities develop. This is exactly what I love to do.
At the start of this article I mentioned the importance of using our time well. At the end of last year, I decided to do what I really love doing, while I achieve something useful for the benefits of others. All my hours of research, preparation and planning pays off. When I see a group of people all delighted to meet each other knowing they will do business it gives me great pleasure. Once again it proves I know my audience, I know exactly what my Clients want and how to get it for them.
I think it’s safe to say I’m a Professional Networker and I love it.
Thank you for your trust in me.
