There’s Networking and there’s Professional Networking! The key to Professional Networking is research, preparation and planning.
I choose a Theme for my event then hand pick a niche group of clients who are specialists in various aspects of that same sector. All guests are private invite only. Sharing this short list with the group, you can do your homework to secure warm leads on the day. Meeting times and days vary from mid morning to lunch to evening. Depending on the event, I organise a coffee or a great lunch to introduce my group. By choice, each event is just 1.5hrs as all attending are very busy people. We like to get straight into meeting people.
A lot of time and effort goes into my research on whom to invite to do business. Having the right mix of businesses guarantees a fruitful result. Recently, our theme was “Property” and chose the Hilton Hotel, Liverpool for lunch. Keeping the numbers low is one key to a very successful outcome. I chose to invite just 14 Business people (including me), all of whom I knew would find new relationships. I also knew my clients were guaranteed top service at the Hilton. So, successful Networking is not hit and miss. It’s about professional preparation and planning. I always research my clients, chat with them, understand their needs, etc and I use only venues I trust. That’s the real key to growing a successful business, while helping clients to grow their business over time.

The general perception on how to network can be very misleading. Most events are attended adhoc with no idea of who will be there. Many people attending have no idea who their own audience is. This can be expensive, both in cash and time and be non productive.
People can pay around £1,500 per year for Membership. That’s usually followed by weekly costs to attend the meeting. Companies generally join more that one organisation. That can be a lot of investment with no guaranteed return on investment. Some people have no idea as to what they hope to get back as no preparation or effort is put into choosing which organisations, if indeed any, are best for your Company.
On top of the direct cash outlay, Networking events take an average of 4 hours of your working day. Then you must commit XXX hours/week to these groups of your precious time. What does that cost you in non-earned fees? Then, there’s the time dedicated to following up, arranging 1-1’s to see if these people will bring you any business. That’s a lot of hours away from work with no income. It’s a very costly way of looking for potential business.
So, what’s the alternative?
